After crossing the Escalante River, the road reaches Calf Creek Recreation Area, an ideal place for a picnic that also offers a six-mile round trip hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls, a 126-foot waterfall emptying into a large pool. Making an ascent along the Hogsback, where cliffs drop into narrow canyons on both sides of the road, Scenic Highway 12 passes through the town of Boulder, home to Anasazi State Park, which features remnants of a prehistoric Indian village and a museum.
